Wellbeing has always been at the heart of all our work in St Peter Apostle. We know how important it is for children to feel safe and happy in order to learn and reach their potential. This year we decided to come together to promote positive mental health and wellbeing and apply to take part in the Amber Flag initiative.  We are lucky to have a committed and enthusiastic staff and this year our wellbeing team had nine staff members (Ms O’Leary, Ms Naylor, Ms Waters, Ms Conlon, Ms Hughs, Ms Duffy, Ms Whirskey, Ms Gilligan and Ms Gleeson.  On our children’s team we had Sean Cooke,  Katie Norton, Nathan Ntone, Aria Foley, Aine Lovett Duffy, Khloe Keogh, Zoe Fogarty, Roxy Fagan. The team worked really hard all year coming up with great ideas for everyone in the school to feel good.

Here are some highlights and goals from the year :

Walk on Wednesdays: To promote positive mental health, the whole school walked every Wednesday for the months of October, November and December. Our infant classes did laps of our school yard and our first and second classes walked on the senior school walking track. For each month we also did a big whole school walk in the Neilstown community. We absolutely loved walking in the neighbourhood and waving to everyone. October’s walk was special because we dressed up for Halloween as was Decembers when we wore our Christmas jumpers.

Fundraising: Our Pieta house fundraiser took place in November 2021. We had a dress up day for our witches walk and the Neilstown community raised 328.55. Our parent’s committee fundraised and we bought benches for children for yard to give them opportunities to gather and sit. Thank you as always to the parents for their generosity. Blue Skies funded eight teachers to take part in a creative mindfulness training course. This course enabled teachers to deliver an 8 lesson mindfulness and wellbeing programme.

Feel Good Friday: Our Amber flag team decided that children in the school would have good ideas for how to feel good and they designed a “Feel good Friday “post-box. They asked the school to post ideas for activities to feel good. The box was shown to children at our zoom assembly. We picked a disco on yard, sports activities, pyjama day and muffins. Children really enjoyed hearing the announcements every Monday at assembly.

Wellbeing Week: The amber flag met in May to brainstorm ideas for our Wellness week 2022. Last year’s week was a huge success. This years activities included, sports day, football competitions, ice-cream, art activities and mindfulness.

Our School submitted our amber flag application at the end of May and we are very pleased to announce that our flag has been granted. We would like to thank the amber flag teacher and student team for their hard work throughout the year.
